The age-old strategy board game comes alive in Battle vs. Chess. The rules of the video game adhere strictly to those of traditional chess, concerning the turn-by-turn movement of pawns, bishops, kings, queens, and other pieces, but when one piece captures another, an animated 3D fight scene takes place between the two. In the regular mode of play, these animations simply highlight the encounter between the two chessboard pieces, with no player interaction -- the player who is moving captures the opponent's piece. In the game's "Action Mode," a fast-paced, player-controlled battle between the two chess-piece characters determines the winner of the square. As in a conventional fighting game, players' button presses translate to medieval weapon swings and special attacks.
